Key Terms & Questions
The language of UK flat-hunting can be confusing to the uninitiated. We have listed below some key terms that you should understand before you show up on the doorstep:
£80pw incl. - Cost per week, including standard bills.
BR - British Rail (mainline, overland station).
ch - central heating (gch is gas central heating).
db - double bedroom
Dep. - Deposit required. Most flats will require a deposit, even an established one as you will effectively be 'paying out' the deposit of the person who you are replacing in the flat. The deposit is often a substantial amount.
d/g - Double-glazing. Useful if you are on a main road and in those chilly winter months.
d/w - dishwasher.
f/f - Fully furnished. Most London flats are furnished to some extent.
gdn - garden.
gge - garage.
N10 - This is a London postcode. Check the London A-Z to get an idea of which codes refer to which areas.
No DSS - No beneficiaries.
n/s- No smoking.
osp - off-street parking.
o/r - Own room. This may seem obvious, but many flats have some or all shared rooms, so check first!
PCM- Per calendar month. A fairly common rental payment period.
p/f - part-furnished.
prf - professional person.
s/c - self-contained (within a larger property).
shwr - shower (an important point to check - some properties have baths only).
w/m - Washing machine. If there isn't a machine, check the proximity of the nearest Laundromat.
