Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey - Background
Westminster Abbey oozes history. For the best part of a millennia, the Abbey has been the resting place of British monarchs, the setting for coronations, and the venue for a range of spectacular events.
Edward the Confessor began construction of the Abbey in 1050, and while little remains of the original building, much of the Abbey is several hundred years old. As much a national monument and mausoleum as a church, Westminster Abbey is one of the most impressive examples of medieval architecture in Britain.
Highlights of a trip to Westminster Abbey include:
- The view of the West Front Towers from Broad Sanctuary
- Poets' Corner, where famous poets are buried.
- St. Edward's Chapel, where many of Britain's monarchs are buried.
- The Nave viewed from the west end
- The 13th century Chapter House
