Open A Bank Account

Funnily enough, it can be easier to set up a UK bank account from overseas than after you've actually arrived. Most banks in your home country will have arrangements with UK banks to enable accounts to be set up on your behalf, with Thomas Cook (visit www.thomascook.com) also offering this service.

UK banks are traditionally quite bureaucratic, and it may come as a shock to you that they can appear somewhat reluctant to accept your business or that their standard of service is not what you are used to. That said, many banks are becoming more customer-orientated, and your experience will differ to a certain extent on what branch or individual you happen to end up dealing with. On the plus side, bank fees are low, and some accounts have no fees at all.

Documents that most banks will require include:

  • proof of earnings
  • details of your employment history
  • proof of residence
  • identification
  • a credit reference from your home bank

You will also invariably be given multiple forms to fill in, so be prepared for a fair commitment of time and patience.

Three of the main banks in the UK include:

All provide extensive personal and business banking services.
